The UN-backed Special Criminal Court in the Central African Republic will on Tuesday, with foreign judges, begin the trial in absentia of former president François Bozizé over crimes against humanity. Bozizé, 79, who seized power in a 2003 coup before being overthrown 10 years later by rebels, has been living in exile in Guinea-Bissau since March 2023.

The director of a film that shows how the people of Sudan have spent years fighting for their freedom has spoken of its power. Amid the civil war in Sudan that has killed tens of thousands since it broke out in 2023, a film made four years earlier during the 2019 uprising against the dictatorship has become something of a beacon for the Sudanese people. "Sudan, Remember Us" is being shown in Paris at a masterclass that discusses how difficult and important it is to film demonstrations and uprisings so that they can be show in the future. While construction of the facility is under a pause order from a high court order, the President is vowing to press ahead, saying Nairobi owes Washington for years of aid support.

In a potentially major advancement in the fight against HIV and AIDS, a South African laboratory is set to produce a generic version of a new preventive treatment that is injectable, and only needs to be administered twice a year. Initial studies show it reduces the risk of transmission by around 99.9%. FRANCE 24's Eunice Masson tells us more from Cape Town.

Hundreds of women and children who were kidnapped by jihadist group Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria were freed over the weekend, local representatives said. It was not immediately clear how the victims' release was secured, although the military said it had executed an "intelligence-led rescue operation".

Ousmane Sonko, who was sacked as Senegal's prime minister after a falling out with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, was re-elected Saturday as head of his Pan-African Pastef party. Sonko was also elected president of the country's National Assembly shortly after his dismissal as prime minister. The rift between Sonko and Faye has plunged the West African nation into political crisis.
