France's justice minister Gérald Darmanin is in Algeria to discuss improving cooperation and the fate of a detained French journalist. The visit is a sign of warming ties between the two countries, after a diplomatic spat triggered among other things by Paris's official backing Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region. For Darmanin, the goal is also to improve judicial cooperation between the two countries.

More than 90 people are believed to have been killed in a fresh outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here's what we know about the outbreak so far.

Dr. Mavoko offers a sobering analysis of the latest Ebola outbreak linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain in the eastern DR Congo. He places the crisis within a longer epidemiological history, reminding viewers that it was first identified in Uganda in 2007 before appearing in the DRC in 2012. He warns that “the body can still continue transmitting the disease” even after death, underscoring how burial practices may unintentionally accelerate contagion. Yet beyond the virology, he offers a broader commentary on public health assistance in conflict zones: “For that, we need peace and security.”

On May 16, a senior IS group figure was killed in a strike led by Nigerian and US forces as part of a joint operation to target jihadists of the group in the northeast of Nigeria. But although Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was a prominent figure of the IS group, he wasn't the second-in-command of IS group worldwide, as US President Donald Trump claimed at the time of his killing. The United States and Nigeria carried out air strikes against Islamic State group targets in northeastern Nigeria on Sunday. The region faces the double threat of attacks from jihadist groups and from criminal gangs that carry out kidnappings, including one that resulted in the abduction of 46 people, most of them children, on Friday.

DRC authorities have been advised to take emergency measures in a bid to contain the latest Ebola outbreak. Dozens of lives have already been claimed by the outbreak, which has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World health Organisation. Cases have also been reported in neighbouring Uganda, among travellers from Congo.

The World Health Organization declared an international health emergency on Sunday over an outbreak of an Ebola strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has killed more than 80 and for which there is no vaccine.

General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the Ebola disease outbreak in Congo and neighboring Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on Sunday after more than 300 suspected cases and 88 deaths. In a post on X, the World Health Organization said the outbreak does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency like the COVID-19 pandemic, and advised against the closure of international borders.

A new Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has caused at least 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths, according to the latest figures released on Saturday. There is currently no vaccine available for the strain, known as Bundibugyo, which is considered highly lethal, the country's health minister Samuel-Roger Kamba told a press briefing in Kinshasa.
